Enable XMP/EXPO for RAM

Your RAM runs at default JEDEC speeds (often 4800MHz for DDR5, 2133MHz for DDR4) unless you enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO/DOCP (AMD) in BIOS. This single setting can boost gaming performance by 10-20%. Press DEL at boot, navigate to Advanced > Memory, and enable the XMP/EXPO profile matching your RAM's rated speed.

Update GPU Drivers Monthly

Outdated GPU drivers cause performance issues, crashes, and missing game optimizations. NVIDIA users: install GeForce App. AMD users: install Adrenalin Edition. Update at least monthly, or when new AAA games launch - drivers often include game-specific optimizations that boost FPS by 10-15%.

Close Background Applications

Background apps steal CPU cycles and RAM from your games. Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) before gaming. Common culprits: Chrome (1-2GB RAM), Discord (300-500MB), Spotify, OneDrive, Adobe Creative Cloud. Enable Windows 11 Game Mode (Settings > Gaming) for automatic optimization.

Optimize Graphics Settings Smartly

Not all graphics settings have equal performance impact. HEAVY settings: shadows, ray tracing, screen-space reflections, ambient occlusion. MEDIUM impact: anti-aliasing, texture quality, view distance. LIGHT impact: post-processing, motion blur, depth of field. Lower heavy settings first for maximum FPS gain with minimal visual loss.

Monitor Temperatures Regularly

Thermal throttling kills performance. Install HWiNFO64 or MSI Afterburner. SAFE TEMPS: CPU under 80°C, GPU under 85°C during gaming. If higher: clean dust from fans/radiators every 3-6 months, check thermal paste age (replace every 2-3 years), ensure cables don't block airflow.

Upgrade to NVMe SSD

If you're using SATA SSD or HDD, NVMe Gen4 is transformative. Windows boots in 8-10 seconds (vs 30+). Modern games load 3-5x faster, eliminating texture pop-in. Get at least 1TB - modern AAA games are 100-150GB each. Gen5 is overkill for gaming (no real benefit yet).

Undervolt CPU and GPU

Undervolting REDUCES power and heat without losing performance. Intel CPUs: use Intel XTU. AMD CPUs: use Ryzen Master Curve Optimizer (-15 to -30). GPUs: use MSI Afterburner curve editor. Start conservative, test stability with Cinebench R23. Typical gains: 5-15°C cooler, 30-50W less power.

Optimize Windows 11 for Gaming

Critical settings: 1) Set Power Plan to 'High Performance' or 'Ultimate Performance'. 2) Disable Memory Integrity (Settings > Privacy & Security > Core Isolation). 3) Disable VBS if not needed (msinfo32 to check). 4) Set HAGS (Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling) ON. 5) Disable Game DVR/Background recording.

Match CPU and GPU Tiers

A balanced build prevents bottlenecks. RULE: spend roughly 1.5-2x more on GPU than CPU for gaming. Examples: $200 CPU + $400 GPU, $300 CPU + $600 GPU, $400 CPU + $800 GPU. For 1080p gaming, CPU matters more. For 1440p/4K, GPU is critical. Use our Bottleneck Calculator to verify.

Cable Management = Better Cooling

Messy cables increase temps by 3-7°C and look bad. ROUTE all cables behind motherboard tray. Use velcro ties (better than zip ties - reusable). Group similar cables. Critical: keep front intake fans unobstructed. Modern cases have dedicated cable channels - use them!

DDR5 vs DDR4 in 2026

DDR5 is now mainstream and recommended for new builds. Benefits: higher bandwidth (6000+ MHz typical), better for productivity, future-proof. DDR4 still works fine for gaming but only consider it if reusing existing parts. AM5 (Ryzen 7000/9000) requires DDR5. Modern Intel supports both - choose DDR5.

PSU Wattage Calculation

Add up CPU TDP + GPU TDP + 150W (other components). Add 25% headroom for transients. Example: 125W CPU + 450W GPU + 150W = 725W. Add 25% = 906W → get 1000W PSU. RTX 4090/5090 need 850W+ minimum. Always buy 80+ Gold or better - the efficiency saves money long-term.
